The checks
What's in the free check?
Enter any UK registration to see, free: the vehicle's make, model, colour, fuel and engine; whether it's taxed and when the tax is due; whether the MOT is in date; its full MOT history with every pass, fail and advisory; every recorded mileage reading, a check for readings that went backwards, and an estimate of its mileage today; plus buyer checks for gaps in the MOT history, problems that keep coming back, and a ULEZ estimate.
What's in the full history check?
Everything in the free check, plus: stolen (police records), insurance write-off and its category, outstanding finance, a mileage cross-check against industry records, the number of previous keepers and when they changed, plate and colour changes, logbook (V5C) issue dates, imported, exported and scrapped markers, VIN and engine number checks, the full specification (exact model, performance, economy, safety rating), the vehicle's road tax rates, and a representative photo of the model. See a sample report.
How much does it cost?
The free check is free. The full history check is £5.99 per vehicle. No account, no subscription, nothing else to pay.
Which vehicles can I check?
Cars, vans and motorbikes registered in Great Britain. Enter the registration exactly as it appears on the number plate.
Where does the data come from?
MOT history and mileage come from the DVSA's official records. Tax status and the full history check come from official and industry sources, including police, insurance and finance registers, through our licensed vehicle-data supplier. Your Car Data is not affiliated with the DVLA or DVSA.
Is the information guaranteed to be correct?
We show the records exactly as they are held on the day your report is generated, from official and industry sources. Records can occasionally be incomplete or out of date, and a report isn't a mechanical inspection, so use it alongside a careful look at the car, its paperwork and a test drive. See our Terms for the full details.
Buying and your report
How do I pay?
Securely through Stripe, by card or Apple Pay. We never see or store your card details.
How quickly do I get my report?
Straight away. After payment your report opens on screen, usually within a few seconds, and we email you a link to it.
How long can I view my report?
Your emailed link works for 90 days from purchase. To keep a permanent copy, tap “Download PDF” at the top of the report.
Do I need an account?
No. Just enter the registration and your email address, and your report link arrives by email.
Can I share my report?
Yes. Anyone with the link can open it, so you can send it to someone helping you buy. Because the link opens the report, treat it like a private link and don't post it publicly.
I haven't received my report email.
Check your spam or junk folder first. If it isn't there, email hello@yourcardata.com with the registration you checked and we'll sort it out.
Can I get a refund?
Because your report is delivered immediately, you agree at checkout that you lose the usual 14-day right to cancel once it's generated, so reports are generally non-refundable. This doesn't affect your legal rights: if a report isn't delivered or is faulty, contact us. If a report ever can't be produced after you've paid, we'll email you and either deliver it or refund you in full.
Understanding your report
Why does it only show the last three characters of the VIN?
Industry rules don't allow the full VIN (or engine number) to be shown to the public. The last three characters are enough to check: make sure the VIN on the car and on the V5C logbook end the same way, and the same for the engine number. If they don't, don't buy. See how to spot a cloned car.
Is the photo of the actual car?
No. It's a representative image of the same model, to help you confirm you're looking at the right type of vehicle. Official records only give a broad colour (such as “Blue”), so the shade in the picture may not match the car exactly.
Why does an untaxed car say it “may be SORN”?
Our tax records show when a car's tax ran out, but not whether it was then declared off the road (SORN). If a car shows as untaxed, check its status on GOV.UK. It must be taxed before it's driven.
How is the estimated mileage worked out?
From the last MOT mileage reading plus the car's recent yearly mileage for the time since. It's only an estimate: compare it with the dashboard, and ask the seller if the dashboard shows far fewer miles. We don't show an estimate if the mileage has ever gone backwards or there isn't enough recent history.
What does the ULEZ check mean?
It's an estimate of whether the vehicle meets the ULEZ and clean air zone emissions standards, based on its fuel and age. The rules differ for cars, vans and motorbikes, so always confirm on TfL's vehicle checker before driving into a zone.
